1972 Colnago Super
58 cm. center-to-center

This is a very special Colnago Super and I am really sad to let it go, but it's too big for me and I have to make room for other projects.
As pretty as it looks in the photos, this baby blue beauty looks even better in person. It is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest vintage Colnagos you will ever see.
With club cutouts on all three lugs, the frameset is no later than a 72, and could even be as early as 71.
The original paint, which I carefully touched up, is absolutely gorgeous - the best example I've ever seen of an early 70s paint job.
The frame has chromed headlugs, which were available only by special order back then, and are rarely seen on a Colnago of this vintage. Even more rare, the chrome is in perfect, and I mean PERFECT, condition.
The bike comes equipped with period-correct pantographed and drilled components, and a few other very cool and rare parts. All of the components came with the bike, except for the saddle, bottle cage, bar tape, wheels and tires, which I added. All the parts I added are, of course, period correct and in excellent condition.
Measurements are: 58 center-to-center seat tube; 57.5 center-to-center top tube; and 82.75 stand-over-height. The stem is 120mm, and the bars are 38 center-to-center.

My "research" indicates that this is a second-generation, short version Pantografata seat post.

The bike came with a nice Ideale saddle, but this Unicanitor is more appropriate - in fact, it's bloody perfect ;)

That is the original fill paint in the flutes and diamonds. I did not re-fill any of the pantographing on the seat post or stem - or the lug cutouts, for that matter.

Supers with chrome head lugs are very rare, even though they were available as a special-order option.

Notice how nicely thinned the lugs are, and notice how beautiful the chrome is. By the way, those are REG shifter covers, period-correct and made in Italy. They look cool and are more comfortable and make shifting easier than bare shifters.

The gum hoods are original! And the Nuovo Record brake levers are first-generation, with the round hole underneath.

I don't know if the yellow housing is original to the bike, but it was on the bike when I got it.

The cotton bar tape is Viva from Jitensha Studio. Very nice quality adhesive-backed tape. Note that I wrapped the bars with only the brake lever clamps on the bar - that is why you don't see any tape criss-cross behind the brake hoods. This makes the tape wrap look super-clean, and allows you to remove the brake levers without having to unwrap the tape.

This Cinelli 1A stem was first seen on the the 73 Super Pantografata model, so it is possible that this stem was added as an upgrade at some point. Note that it is the earliest version of the 1A, with the exterior nut.

Correct Cinelli Giro d'Italia bar in beautiful condition.

That is the original paint-fill inside the diamonds. By the way, notice that there is no electrical tape holding the ends of the cotton tape. A drop of Super-Glue does the trick.

Beautiful chrome TA cage in perfect condition - these are very hard to find in this condition.
(Please note the the rear brake shoes are installed backwards in the photos, but I have corrected the mistake.)

These Pirellis are the cat's meow! Ultra rare, almost impossible to find in any condition - I know I'm going to regret letting them go, but they are perfect for this bike. By the way, these Pirelli's happen to be in like-new condition, never ridden and very well preserved.

Shiny Martanos with grooved sidewalls.

The calipers are in beautiful condition - rust-free, shiny chrome on the hardware, and scratch-free original anodized finish on the arms.

Regina Oro freewheel and Regina Oro SC chain - top of the line Regina chaing at the time.

I'm sure that this derailleur is an original component of the bike.

The no-date-code crank arms and the Merckx-style drilled ring are probably original components too.

The large ring is beautifully drilled and countersunk. Colnago made these rings originally for Eddy Merck, and they are commonly referred to as Merck-style rings.

Notice the clear housing over the shifter cable - I added that to make shifting smoother and to protect the underside of the cable guides. It's not original but it's inconspicuous enough that I don't think it's objectionable.

This bike was well cared for - otherwise those chainstay decals would not be there today.

Double butted chrome plated Prym spokes from Germany (36 front and rear). The chrome on the spokes is not pefect, but overall they still look great.
